Quick Survival Tips:

Remember some basic survival rules for any emergency situation. You'll need to have these essentials:

  • Water
  • Shelter
  • Food
  • Some form of Climate Control/Warmth
  • Security
  • Clothing
  • First Aid Supplies
  • Money or Barterable items (Gold, Silver, Food, etc).

General Tips for Natural Disasters:

Here are some general tips when dealing with most natural disasters. One of the first things I would do is go to your state government website and see if they have specific information on emergency preparedness.

Most websites will have locations for shelters, contact information and emergency preparedness tips.

  • Know the weather hazards in your area
  • Know your community's warning system and evacuation plans
  • Know your community Emergency shelters
  • Make a Family Disaster Preparedness plan and run through it together
  • Have a few meeting points and a way to contact each other
  • Make a list of emergency telephone numbers and contacts
  • Inspect your home for potential hazards and remove them if possible
  • Make sure you have current and working smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extingishers (preferrably multi-purpose)
  • Keep 72 hour Survival kits or Bug Out Bags ready in case you need to evaculate your home.
  • As a minimum keep photocopies of important documents in a waterproof container
  • Keep a smaller emergency preparedness kit in your car
  • Remember to check and practice your survival plan

Self-Defense / Street Survival tips:

As a martial arts instructor, bodyguard and former WWII combatives instructor the first thing I teach when it comes to practical street self-defense is AWARENESS!

Know your environment. Know what's going on around you.

The reality is that street violence is messy, quick and chaotic. It's not the movie fight scene where the hero defeats 4 people without any injury or consequences. Forget about it.

Survival is your key, not winning battles. So know when things are looking bad, get out of there any way you can - even it if means distracting and running. Don't be a hero. Be alive.

Take some time and look for a practical self-defense class or martial art. Know how to defend yourself if you have to.
