Survival Gear 101 - The Basics

Survival Gear is where guys can go completely nuts. We all love our gadgets. But sometimes all you need is a few basic necessities to make it through an emergency.

While there are lots of funky survival gadgets on the market, this page will list several of the basic necessities that you won't want to do without in a crisis.

When you look at basic urban survival needs, you'll want to know what's going on with the world outside via a survival radio (different than your regular one - usually hand powered or solar powered).

You'll want some lighting when things get dark via a survival light (or in a pinch, glow sticks can come in handy too). And you'll want a simple multi-tool that you can use when finding the perfect tool is nowhere to be found.

To keep yourself warm you'll need a survival blanket or shelter when the heat goes out, or if you have someone suffering from shock.

And finally, find a good well rounded survival book that would cover some basic first aid and long term sustainablity options if things go on longer than expected. I like When Technology Fails by Matthew Stein but there are certainly others out there.

If you can't live with the thought of having no electricity, you can also get portable solar power chargers for some of your gear, and look at gas generators for larger needs.

A Generator can be a God-send in a crisis. People in Quebec Canada were grateful when they had their own gas generator when a winter storm knocked out powerlines for almost a week several years back. You can usually find some good deals at your local sears or home depot.

So those are some basic survival gear options you'll need to prepare yourself for the worst case emergency situation.

You'll also want to look at building or buying good all-round survival kits with food rations, water first-aid kit, blanket, pocket tool, matches, etc.
