Survival Food - What Should You Store?

survival food Why store survival food? In case of an emergency you may not be able to get food for days or even weeks. By storing emergency food ahead of time you can prepare your entire family to survive a crisis.

Having food storage can protect you from emergencies like:

  • Rising Food Costs (Due To Hyperinflation)
  • Future Unemployment
  • Natural Disasters like Hurricanes, Floods and Earthquakes
  • Food Shortages Due To Government Food Price Controls or Other Disasters
  • Civil Unrest and Riots
  • Blackouts, Mass Panics, Store Closings or Bank 'Holidays'

What kind of survival food should you store? This page lists a brief overview of each:

#1 Freeze Dried Food

Freeze dried food like Wise Foods or Mountain House is one of the best ways to store food for the long term.

Freeze Dried food has some great advantages over other types of foods like canned goods or even dehydrated foods:

#1 Long Shelf Life

You can get freeze dried foods with up to a 25 year shelf life. Even after 25 years, the food is still good to go - you just add water and you have tasty Beef Stroganoff or Chicken Teriyaki. This also saves you money in the long run since you don't have to keep switching out your food and buying more.

#2 Easy To Make

With freeze dried meals, you just add hot water (it doesn't even have to be hot in case of a power outage you could do it cold).

Then you wait for 5 - 10 minutes and you've got a meal. It's so easy, even a kid could do it. In an emergency situation you don't want anything complicated to have to cook.

#3 Best Tasting

Freeze dried food tends to maintain the best taste and flavor over other options. It also tends to keep more of its nutrients (which again you'll need in an emergency) because of the gentle drying process.

The best source for freeze dried meals that I like is Wise Foods. They're very affordable and they sell their freeze dried foods in smaller mylar pouches (vs larger #10 cans) which means less food spoilage.

There's also freeze dried food packages from Nitropak. They've got great prices and free shipping. Plus I find their ordering process and customer service is excellent (you get emails, tracking numbers, etc.)

#2 MREs

survival food

MRE stands for 'Meals Ready To Eat'. It's a military term as these meals are similar to the ones used by the military in combat (They are not the exact same but pretty close).

MREs are complete meals (entree, snack, dessert, heating source, etc.) in a lightweight packaging. They tend to be higher in calories than your standard meal, which makes them good for emergency workers or anyone doing heavy labor during an emergency.

While they don't have the shelf life of freeze dried foods, it's still pretty long at around 3 - 5 years. MRE's are great for on-the-road food storage or for bug-out-bags and survival kits.

#3 Dehydrated Foods

You can often find dehydrated foods on their own or as a part of some survival food storage packages.

There are some foods which do better when they are dehydrated and you can't get them freeze dried. Dehydrated foods don't hold their taste or flavor like freeze dried meals but they're still pretty decent.

Like MRE's, the shelf life is shorter on these foods but again, still better than other options.

A final benefit to dehydrated foods is that they tend to cost a bit less than freeze dried meals. So they're great as affordable 'add-ons' to your food storage.

#4 Bulk Essentials

Some people go all out and store bulk essentials like beans, rice, sugar, salt, grains, flour etc. And you can find some long term survival food packages that are basically just bulk essentials (instead of freeze dried meals).

The advantage to this is that (if you're a good cook) you have the flexibility to make up pancakes or breads, etc. in case of a long term emergency situation.

The downside is that if you're not a good cook (and in an emergency situation, most of us are not), don't expect to suddenly know what to do with a bunch of flour and sugar. Your family may end up killing you after their 5th meal of rice and beans.

Plus you can get into problems with bugs and mould if you don't store your essentials properly.

So those are some of your options. Personally, for an urbanite like me, I like the easy, best-tasting solution: freeze dried meals.

It's just easier to buy it once and forget about it. And if the worst happens I know that I'll have delicious tasting meals I could never whip up on my own. But it's up to you.
