Hurricane Survival Kit 101 - How To Prepare
A hurricane survival kit can give you what you need to make it through a serious hurricane for 1-3 days.
Hurricane survival kits come in 2 forms really - there's the kit you have on hand at home. This is usually a large plastic tote with a resealable lid.
In it you store things like food, water, tools you'll need to shore up your home, first aid kit, etc.
The other form of survival kit is similar to a bug out bag or 72 hour survival kit - a pack that you can grab and go should you have to leave your home.
The home kit is obviously for your home. You'll use it during the storm if you don't have to evacuate and you're just going to wait it out.
The bug out bag or backpack is if you have to leave your home. It should essentially be a 72 hour surival kit like the 72 Hour Executive Kit from Nitrpak.
In your home kit be sure to have essentials like non-perishable food (freeze dried meals last for up to 25 years), water for everyone (2 litres per person per day), medication, tools to perform maintenance on the home, toiletries, flashlight, extra batteries, first aid kits, cash and copies of important papers. You might also want to include blankets, sleeping bags, garbage bags and other toiletry items.
Hurricane Survival Kit Tips:
It's important to note that a survival kit (whether a home kit or bug-out-bag) is only meant to last you a few days. It's not appropriate for a serious hurricane situation like Hurricane Katrina.
Make sure you listen to the radio or television for hurricane progress reports. Also be sure to have your gas tank full and even have some extra gas on hand.
Bring in outdoor objects such as lawn furniture, toys, and garden tools and anchor objects that cannot be brought inside. Secure your home by closing and boarding up windows.
The advantage to hurricanes vs other natural disasters is that weather experts can see them coming and give us fair warning. The problem comes when people try to prepare at the last minute.
The smart thing to do is to prepare in advance so you don't have to go running around, fighting crowds (sometimes literally) for food and water. Sometimes if you wait too long, the store shelves are literally empty.
Prepare now - or as early in advance as you can. The more you prepare, the better chance you have to ride out the storm in relative comfort with minimal damage.
