72 hour survival kits, are short term (3 day) survival kits for localized disasters or other circumstances (civial unrest, anarchy) where governmental support services can react quickly to assist you in one or two days.

In fact, FEMA warns on their website that in case of a natural disaster, they probably won't make it to you for about 3 days (that's assuming things go well).

While you can try to put together a 72 hour survival kit yourself, it's usually easer (and cheaper) to buy one from a survival store online like Nitropak or Wise Foods.

These kits will give you pretty much everything you need for 72 hour survival like food, water, blankets, first aid kit, multi-use tool, matches, etc. (You have to include personal items like medication or ID papers).

However it's important to note that these kits are not necessarily appropriate for situations like Hurricane Katrina, or what we saw in Haiti in 2010.

• You can carry one in your car, home or office - so you're ready to go whenever and don't have to travel home to get it
  
  

Recommendations:

I personally like the Executive Survival Kit from Nitropak because it is sturdy, has practically everything you need, is lightweight and also includes a solar flashlight/radio. It's also a lot cheaper than if you bought everything included yourself.

If you have family there's also a 4-person 72 hour kit that covers a family of 4 and is lightweight enough to carry.

If you want a survival kit that will last you a big longer, you can get a 2 week survival bag from Wise Foods with 2 weeks worth of water and freeze-dried meals.

No matter what you choose, the most important thing is to make sure you are prepared before something happens.
